Plants and Pets: Keeping Our Furry Friends Safe 🌿🐾

2–3 minutes

One of the things I’ve noticed while pet sitting is how curious animals can be about plants. Cats love to paw at dangling leaves, dogs sometimes give new greenery a little taste-test, and even bunnies will happily nibble their way through anything green they find. It’s adorable — but it can also be risky.

Some of the most popular houseplants are actually toxic to pets, and it’s easy to forget that what looks beautiful in our living room could make our furry companions sick.

A Few Plants to Watch Out For 🚫🌱

Here are some that I always remind pet parents about:

Lilies – especially dangerous for cats. Even a small nibble or pollen dust on their fur can be harmful. Aloe Vera – good for us, not so good for them. It can upset their stomach. Monstera & Philodendron – gorgeous leaves, but they can irritate mouths and tummies. Tulip & Daffodil bulbs – dogs that like to dig can get into trouble here.

Whenever I’m looking after pets, I keep an eye out for these, just in case curious noses get too close.

Safer, Happier Alternatives 🌸

The good news is, you don’t have to give up on plants altogether! Some pet-friendly choices I’ve seen thrive in homes I visit are:

Spider Plants – cats love them, and they’re harmless if chewed. Areca Palms – big, beautiful, and safe. Herbs like Basil or Parsley – safe for most pets and handy for cooking, too.

My Go-To Tips as a Pet Sitter 🐶🐱

When I’m caring for pets, here’s what I do to make sure they stay safe around plants:

Place plants wisely: High shelves or hanging baskets work, though cats sometimes still manage to reach them. Offer alternatives: A little pot of cat grass or a chew toy keeps pets busy and away from the plants. Know the warning signs: If a pet seems drooly, lethargic, or has tummy troubles, I always check whether they’ve been near plants and let the owner know right away.

Final Thoughts 💚

Our pets are naturally curious, and that’s part of what makes them so much fun. With a little awareness and some safe plant choices, we can enjoy the best of both worlds — a home full of greenery and happy, healthy animals, cats and dogs!
